According to a recent article in the Crier.net; Brookhaven officials have begun construction of a new Skyland Park, a four-acre facility that will cost some $4 million.
Work began on Monday, July 24th when Mayor John Ernst started the heavy machinery to begin demolition of the former home of the Georgia Vital Records office and once the home of Skyland Elementary School. The razing of the building and the construction of the new school are the result of a land deal with the DeKalb Schools. The school system will take over a former city park to build a new John Lewis Elementary School and the city will create a park from the former state property.
The park will include two sand volleyball courts, picnic shelters, a new restroom structure, a large open field, shade structures, two dog parks and a natural playground area.
The shade structures also will serve as public charging stations, with canopies made of material that will incorporate solar panels to generate electronic charges. The park also will feature space for parking electric cars and will be the first in Brookhaven to have a car charging station. A new elementary school at this location will be the first effort to reduce over-crowding in the Cross Keys school cluster.
